Did you know that when the weather gets warm and the temperatures reach approx. 90-100F (varying in humidity), fans begin circulating hot air that can increase heat stress? Heat Illness. Choosing an electrical fan is ofen boasted as the most economically sound form of cooling down because they cost less; but in fact, you could be in danger of heat illness.
In order for an electrical fan to cool the body, there must be moisture on the surface of the skin that evaporates to produce the cooling effect. This becomes problem (1) during heat stroke in which a person stops sweating and (2) in the case of elderly not sweating because of delayed heat regulation. For a fan to be effective, you must be sweating or manually add moisture to the skin (i.e. using a damp cloth). As temperatures rise towards 100F, the effectiveness of the fan decreases. As it reaches approximately 100F, the fan begins to cause harm by circulating overheated air to the skin at a rate that is faster than the body can rid of the heat through cooling by sweating. It would result in a consequent net increase in body temperature. Taking a cold shower or bath would be more beneficial than a fan. The best solution would be to turn on the air conditioner or look for public places that have air conditioning like libraries, cafes, or shopping malls.

Fan vs AC?
If you have an air conditioner or heat pump that is 6 years old, most likely you have a system that requires R-22 refrigerant. This R-22 refrigerant has increased in price over 200% since last fall and the United States is required to phase R-22 out by year 2020. This is a worldwide phase out of ozone-depleting CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). Releases of R-22 such as those from leaks, contribute to ozone depletion that also contribute to global warming; therefore, the United States is transitioning away from R-22.
The reason for this cost increase was after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ordered that manufactures cut production of R-22 material. In 2010 the United States was required to reduce its consumption by 65%. In 2015, the United States is required to reduce its consumption by 90%. And by 2020, reduce consumption by nearly 100%. Since the United States is phasing it out, the demand is getting higher for R-22; consequently, the price keeps increasing.
Most air conditioners and heat pumps built in the last 2-5 years use a different refrigerant called R-410A which is better for the environment. There are an estimated 75 percent of existing home air conditioners or heat pumps that continue to rely on R-22 according to industry sources.
If your system is in need of repair and is leaking refrigerant, you can still purchase R-22, but you may want to look into a newer energy-efficient system to not only save money on repair costs, but also on utility costs.

In the indoor air quality arena, there is a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) that is given to filters. The rating is used to rate the ability of a filter to remove particles from the air as they pass through the filter. The higher the MERV rating the cleaner the air! Did you know the number one killer of a furnace is DUST? Yep it’s true that we need to keep our furnaces cleaned and maintained to help with the air quality of our home.

The first level of defense is to change your filters in your heating system on a regular basis. Store bought filters catch dust particles. Typically store-bought filters have a MERV rating of 1-4 removing less than 1% of airborne particles. A brand name pleated Fantastic Filter MERV 8 rating filter removes less than 2% of airborne particles. And a pleated Fantastic Filter MERV 12 rating filter removes less than 4% of airborne particles. For the best defense, the MERV 12 rated filter would be recommended.
The second level of defense is to install a MicroPower Guard.
